Automotives
The hum of a motor revving up, the feeling of wind in your hair when driving, the smell of screeching tires-these have become cultural marking points in the age of technology and the automobile: indeed, autos are a part of our communal consciousness. Often fetishized and seldom ignored, autos are all around us: in our streets, in our movies, and in our televisions.
Originally just a mode of transportation, autos have morphed into an integrated component: add autos to man, and the "man-machine" appears. Being a prevalent concept in modern art and literature, our fusion to the automobile has been an all but ubiquitous element in this century's human expression. We cannot worship enough the enhanced mobility which four wheels and a motor can provide: autos are not going away in the near future.
The variety of ways autos can be perceived may be a large element of their success: the muscle car, the minivan, and the hybrid car are all examples of the multiplicity of autos and their different functions in modern society. The way we are powering our autos is changing as well: with new environmental demands comes new integration of technology. Hybrid engines are changing the way autos work in our global environment-this is direly needed in view of the upcoming oil crisis. Ethanol and Hydrogen fuel are also making autos adaptable to our new setting: we live in an age where we cannot ignore our effect on the earth's climate.
Impossible, then, to extricate our identity as a human race from that of our autos. We must face the future together, making sure to be realistic, sustainable, and socially conscious.
